Polder Instant Read Thermometer...
I saw this advertised in bon appetit magazine. It looks and sounds creditable. Does anyone own one yet? http://www.polderonline.com/product/659458.html

It doesn't mention it being a thermocouple type thermometer. If not, it's just like the normal instant reads. Not superfast like a thermopen.

I checked it out on Amazon...only 2 user reviews...and not very good ones at that. I'll stick to my thermapen. I was just looking for an inexpensive alternative...but you know what they say...you get what you pay for.

I used that one at my Aunt's place on christmas, wasn't too impressed.
This is the alternative to the thermapen as recommended by Cook's Illustrated: http://www.amazon.com/CDN-Proaccurat.../dp/B00064BCPM They report it has a 10 second read time, as opposed to the 5 second read time of a thermapen.

I got the one in Jeremiah's post, the CDN. So far, it's fast enough for me. It gets close in 5 - 6 seconds and then a few more to stabilize. It's a great value for the price. I'm satisfied.
