My local grocery store chain is Kroger. Kroger moves manager special items to different areas. You just need to keep an eye out.

I am noticing that charcoal and other items are hitting the shelves with newer logos and different types. I did find a bin with Kingsford Cherrywood briquettes on clearance for $2/bag and western wood peach chips on sale for $1.29/bag.

I bought 5 bags of charcoal and 2 bags of peach chips. $12.60 before tax.

Have you ever used different wood type briquettes? How are they different from normal briqs?

Last fall, I found comp, everyday kingsford, and cherrywood briquettes on clearance for the same price. I think I bought about 100lbs of charcoal for very cheap. The cherrywood is not too noticeably different because it's a mild wood. When it's white-hot and used for searing, it's pretty much the same as normal.

I can't speak to the hickory, apple, or other flavors. But for $2/bag, you really can't go wrong trying it out.

One of the best Kroger "managers special" deals I ever got was 6 bags of Western Pecan chunks for $1.99 bag. 6 bags is all they had or I'd have bought a lot more.

I'm down to my last two bags of the Kingsford stockpile I amassed last year, and my last bag of Cowboy lump. Could use some more mesquite chunks too. Time to look out for more deals!!
