Well said!

Oh yes!! Just returned from the MIL's dropping off a drum for her and picking up the last one she burned out for me. I'll start cleaning it up and building next weekend.

Would you guys burn it once if it had soy bean oil in it? I would think that would be perfect for the first smoke and its alreay black so i could paint it as needed.

What ever it takes to get to bare metal inside. Most food grade barrels have a liner of epoxy or vinyl etc. This must be burnt off to bare metal. Taake care to avoid the toxic smoke.

It appears to be bare. Its shiny and clean... except for some remaining oil. Do you think i should burn it once just to be safe?

I say burn it, I ork with that oil daily and it's not the food grade stuff so just be safe and get burning.

Mine had olive oil in it...I just wiped it out and fired up a full basket of cheap Rancher briqs so I could play with the vents just to get an idea of how she burned before puttin' some grub on. :p

I'll be knocking it out tomorrow and hopefully cooking myself a birthday brisket. :-D
After the burn...

Had a section of stainless put together last week to use on sunny days and went back today realizing we dont get many so had a spare done for when it's raining.

It measures two inches so it fits directly into the bung on the lid..

Looking like your on you way. Gotta ask, Using those MM things or those superior inches?

LOLOLOL Man I couldn't tell ya I just went to see my buddy and said I would need his help with some welding after I pillaged his shop.

Actually it reads both = 2" X 50mm ( see they are coming around to the right side over here.) :D

I left the shop thinking I should have say an 1" x 14" made for the intake with the elbow and a ball valve but I really don't want it hanging out too far from the drum.

Stainless is cool!!

Oh, you've noticed then:mrgreen:

Noooo, we are slowly dragging you around to our way of thinking, get it right man!

Looks like you'r gonna win battle of the drums (for speed of construction and commissioning for use anyway)

I don't know man I plan on falling off a barstool sometime before 3PM today ( :icon_clownbirthday mod :icon_clown) so it may not be a great day for smoking. There is one other wall to climb, unless I pirate the temp gauge from the other drum I'm still at least a week away so you still have a chance at wining the tea party. lol

Ready to drill for the grate, I'll only have one for now because of the lack of Weber dome lids so how far from the top would you guys recomend? I was thinking about eight inches should work and give room for a bird and a rib rack.

Newbie Building a UDS

Not sure what I'm doing, but after reading the entire thread, I had to give it a shot. Got a reconditioned drum and some miscellaneous parts and started building. Did an initial burn with charcoal after torching the inside with a propane torch. Today's goal was go as hot as possible to help burn off anything that shouldn't be in there. Tomorrow I'll go for long-term temperature control. Soon I'll throw some real meat on this thing and see how it goes!
