Help with painting grills
Just needing some tips on painting some grills. I'm fixing to paint a tailgating grill that I've made out of an old smoker. Wanting to paint it team colors with some logos painted on. I've done some googling and mostly I just find info on how to paint grills black. I've seen some pretty cool paint jobs on these boards, so maybe those of you with experience can give me some good tips. Hopefully they turn out well and I can post pics.
BTW...starting with a KC Chiefs tailgater and then possibly an R2D2 water smoker. |

Well, it depends on your budget and application. For a grill you will need higher temp paint to withstand hot grilling. This will reduce the available paints at your disposal. For smokers, I usually get the high heat engine enamels found at auto parts stores. These are usually good to around 500* I believe. You can also go higher with paints and primers that are good to 1200-2000. However, the higher you go the fewer choices you will have without finding some place to order from.

It looks like the main problem im going to have is finding the right colors. Although Red, Yellow, and White aren't that uncommon for engine paint. From doing some more searching, I could spend quite a bit of $$$ for the higher temp paints.
What would be a good method for painting on the Arrowhead emblem? Using a stencil made of paper of some kind? |

Check your local automotive stored for engine header paint. Rated at higher temps than engine paint. Usually 7-8 bucks a can.

Red you can find. You should be able to find yellow brake caliper paint. Or, think about using white instead. Yeah, a stencil would probably work best. Or you could use painter's tape and mask off what you want.

Not trying to hijack the thread...but would powder coating work on a UDS, for the temps we cook at? I don't really know, and my UDS is definitely UGLY. Need to clean up the outside and put a coat of paint on it.

It kind of depends on your application. If you are not going to cook at high temps you can get away with using normal automotive type paint. I normally cook at 300 or so on this grill but do get it as high as 400 for periods up to an hour. I have been cooking on it now for 3 years and use it a lot. It is painted with Nason base coat - clear coat automotive paint. I also use regular rustoleum paint on my UDS and have had no problems with temps under 350.

My neighbor, took his Char Griller down to a local auto body shop and paid the guy $75.00 to sand blast and then paint his grill. The color is a neon orange. Looks great. If you have the money that is an option.

Yes, it would work fine. However, at the low temps of a UDS, engine enamel will work just fine and only cost you $5-6.
