Default Sauce

For competitions, do most people make their own sauce, or use a store bought?

We use a combination of both. For some categories we use homemade sauce and for the others we use store bought...just until we create sauces we are happy with to use in competition.

I don't know about "most", but a lot of people use commercially bottled sauce doctored up with various ingredients to their taste.

We make our own rubs and sauces, so we've got a distinct flavor profile. Good thing we don't compete in "Blues Hog or you're DAL" country!

Whether it is homemade or store bought, does it compliment the rub you are using and are you achieving the flavor profile you are looking for?
Practice and try different combinations of store bought sauce and try adding your rub, or honey, or brown sugar to get the flavor you are looking for. We've spent HOURS on achieving a flavor profile we like. If it ever stops scoring for us, it might be easier to quit that to go through all of that again.... LOL

On rubs and sauces both, I feel that there are people that have invested much more time and research so we buy everything off the shelf and adjust as needed with our ingredients to make it what we want.
