I made some sopapillas yesterday.
They are tasty sprinkled with powdered sugar and filled with honey.....
I like them with a bit of cold smoked honey for a change.

the cold smoked honey thread... http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53606

I mix
2 cups of flour
1 TBs of baking powder
1/2 tsp of salt
then blend in 1 TBs of shortening until mixed well

Add 2/3 cup of lukewarm water

knead for 5 minutes..then let it rest for 10 minutes.

I divide the dough in 1/2 and roll 1/2 out at a time...about 12"x10"
Then cut into squares or any shape you like

Fry in hot oil or lard.. (400 degrees) til golden

Sprinkle with powdered sugar...

Bite the end off and fill with as much smoked honey as you like. lol

They are really good when hot.

Thanks for checking out my sopapillas.

Nice looking sopapillas! We usually get them at a mexican restaurant, we frequent, usually with fresh whipped cream and a strawberry syrup. Always very good. You have convinced me to try them at home. Great posts, as usual.

Dang! Your posts are always like little Christmas presents I can't wait to open.

I agree...but it's more like opening a present with a picture of what you are getting for Christmas...since you can't truely enjoy those treats...
I'm sure the sopapillas and smoked honey taste much better than my dusty monitor:mrgreen:

Keep up the good work Cowgirl!

Looks great Patty! Hey...the link to the cold smoked honey was for a lot of good lookin' meats...but no honey? What did you use for smokewood and for how long? (for the honey)

My father was a beekeeper, and the only smoke we ever got in the honey was when he got carried away with his bee tools. I'm going to have to give that one a try in his honor...

Nice looking sopapilla's Cowgirl. Thanks for the post.

Wow! I didn't realize they had that few ingredients. Do they naturally just puff and hollow out? How long did they cook in the oil? Thanks!

Thanks folks!

Chris and Ross, thank you!
Max, that whipped cream and strawberry syrup sounds great! I'll give it a try.
Pat, the cinnamon sounds good too... Thanks!
Jim and Shawn.... lol
JD, honey, I smoked this batch at 65 degrees for 7 hours in my little smokehouse. I give it a stir about every hour. Used a mixture of apple and hickory.:biggrin:

Dan, I DO appreciate you checking out my ..... food posts.

Zydecopaws, it would be nice to have some bees! Bet that honey was excellent.

Big'un they puff up on their own and just take a few minutes to fry. You do have to make sure the oil is hot enough though or they won't puff up.
Hope you give it a try sometime!

Thank you Ken! They are pretty tasty...hope you try them. :)

Jeanie - well, I have nothing to say. You left me speechless. Hard to do. Oh, I can say, "AWESOME"

Oh wow, fresh sopapillas, I haven't had those since... dang I'm getting old! Thanks for the post and the trip back to my childhood, Cowgirl. Great writeup as always. :)
