Self cleaning oven...

Put the cast iron pan in the oven upside down and run it through a self clean cycle. might still be some stubborn rust spots

or if you prefer I have had great results with plain white vinegar for rust removal on chains. stick the pan in a clean bucket , and cover with white vinegar. let sit overnight, but leave the bucket outside or in the garage, it can stink a bit while it works.

Very nice score Ronelle, many Dutch Brethren would be jealous of you...now...get you some butter and powdered sugar!
We'd like to see some of these when you're done:

Incidentally, as Phubar can tell you, these supposedly were made first in either a monastery or abbey in the 18th century. For this reason, they also go by the name monk's farts.

We used to cheat and get them prepackaged at Albert Heijn.

I have cleaned and restored cast iron for a lot of years . I cleand one pan that was brown with rust. I cook with it today. Vinegir is the way to go. Just soak it in vinegar for at least 4 hours . Clean it with steel wool . If all the rust is not gone rinse it in cold water. (vinegar is a acid . Then put it down for anouther 4 hours till it is gone . THEN if it has food crust on it ?? well talk to me later . Thats anouther post .

Just for general info, we have a cast iron one of these and 2 thick cast aluminum ones....the aluminum ones kind of suck, except they're lighter and easier to carry. I LOVE the CI one!

I use 50/50 water and white vinegar for rust also. No more then 4 hours. That's a good score.

Thanks, gang! I probably won't mess with it for a couple of days since we have family coming over tomorrow.

I guess they're not your faves, since you're not going to be making them poffertjes.

I'm following my own advice and not trying something for the first time when company is coming over

Nice score Ron!

I've used the oven cleaning cycle to clean cooking residue from CI. I don't think it will do anything to the rust. (And If you ever decide to try that, do it on a day when you can open all of the windows! It put out enough smoke to set off fire alarms all over the house.) For rust I would use a mild abrasive such as a Scotch brite pad or steel wool to remove the loose stuff. Anything tight will be sealed over by the seasoning.

I've seasoned some stuff using the routine recommended here: http://sherylcanter.com/wordpress/20...ing-cast-iron/

Fat little pancakes made with buckwheat flour sound like something I would like!

Nice find, Ron! I found an identical one at a moving sale a couple of months ago for 8 bucks. It has a little rust but not much. I thought it was an egg poacher? Thanks gang for your never ending knowledge!! Now I know what it's really for! BTW, I have an electrolysis tank set up. Now THAT'S the way to remove rust! It's real simple to do, with absolutely no damage to the original piece.

I was wondering what the self-clean cycle would do to the rust. I was just about to ask.

Thanks... I bookmarked that site.

I doubt it would be worth building an electrolysis tank, but I did read on how to do it.
