Hi guys Jason here from New Zealand, after watching all the seasons of BBQ Pit Masters, BBQ Crawl and BBQ Pit Wars then hours of you-tube videos on how to build a UDS and smoke pork, beef and chicken, I set myself a summer project to build a UDS.

Its almost done with painting to start today. The one thing I'm really not sure about is how hot the exterior of the drum will get as I've got a sweet Jim Beam tin sign for the front of if but I don't want to put it on if its going to get so hot that the paint melts off.

I was thinking of putting a couple of spacers between the drum and the sign so there was about a inch or 2.5cm air gap.

Once done I'll be doing ribs mostly but also chicken and pork.

Can anyone tell me if this is sufficient or how hot its likely to get?

Thanks Jason

Yea a gap is a good idea! If there's a 1-2" gap you'll be good to go.

It gets hot!

Standoffs are a must!

i wouldn't add the sign if you value it. Even with the spacing, eventually it will get meat and sauce drippings, some oxidation and may warp or distort with heat and heavy use. If i were you i would paint the drum whatever color(s) you like (add a painted decal??) and mount that cool sign on a nice piece of wood and hang it next the smoker. Congrats on the build and enjoy.

Welcome aboard!
The drums gets as hot as the temp you cook at. Depending on if it is windy, cold, raining etc. Stand offs will help.
If your really worried about your sign. You could use bolts, 1/4X20X1 with a nut on the outside to secure the bolts firmly for example. Make some internal threaded doweling by drilling and tapping short 1 inch pieces of 1/2 in dowel rod ( or smaller if you require). Then just use 1/4X20X1/2 in bolts into the dowel rod to hold the sign on. The wood shouldn't burn and will keep the sign cool. If that makes sense.
Just a thought.

Thanks guys for the advice I think the sign will have to go onto the wall of the man cave.

Ok I'm off to put the first layer of paint on
