Also be curious to see how long the 1/4” plate “firebox” last. Everything I have ever read people say it needs to be 1/2” minimum.

1/4" crs plate should handle any heat a gravity feed can put out. !/4" plate works for 80% of offset smokers where there is actual fire. Burning hotter than any coals/wood chunks.
Sure heavier gauge should make any firebox last longer. But how much longer? Is it really required. Purchaser to make that decision.
There is a giant price gap to get a prettier paint job and thicker firebox.
If it only lasted 10 yrs. I'm guessing if taken care of. You would get more than 10 yrs.
By then, you might want to go another route/type cooker anyways. Saving money

Alejandro corrected/updated me on Chute, Firebox (bottom section of chute) and Ash Box/Air box

From email :

Regarding the firebox:
The charcoal chute is made of 14 ga.
The combustion chamber is 1/4"
The air intake chamber is 1/8"

Would be great to meet Donnie but we have plans. Going to spend the day with the grand baby. She's 4 weeks old. Our first one.

Make an ash pan. That will help a lot.

Sure. I usually Mod mine and Post it to Help others. Old Country are Basic due to Price/ Weight/ Time restraints that Academy puts on Old Country but they are Good smokers for the Price.

Hell, I'd Mod a High Dollar Smoker if I think it needs it or I want something it doesn't have or do............
