lump consumption in stick burner
I have a large BGE and am familiar with the insulated cabinet smokers. I have the fever - you know - and really want a stick burner - 36" to 48" Lang, Pioria, Jambo ect... I was curious about how much lump I would burn per hour if I decided to use a charcoal basket?
Thanks for your help, I'm weighing all my options before I buy. |

If you go with a stick burner you need to burn wood i don't think my Jambo would ever get up to temp using charcoal or lump.

It will get up to temp with charcoal but why the heck would you burn charcoal in a stick burner? Wood gives the flavor we all crave. I only use charcoal to get my stick burner up to temp then it's wood all the way.

One chimney full to get it started and then splits the rest of the way. Charcoal is verry minimal.

I do realize it is a stick burner made for using splits as needed to keep the temp. I know on occasion some people use a basket for a lump only cook and I was curious how much it takes.

I'll give you an estimate from what I use in my off set and that's about 3-4 lbs an hour.
That would be equal to the 36" Lang. This is in the warmer time here, so it should be close for you. I do prefer wood, but sometimes you have to go outside the box

Yeah, 3-4 pounds an hour sounds right. You're much better off going splits. It gets crazy costly very quickly if you're using lump or briquettes.
