I am building a do clone smoker. The cook chamber and fire box and pipes connecting them are 1/4 thick. I am thinking about insulating the fire box. I plan on 2 in miloral* wool then wrapping it with 20 gage steel. Is this to thick? Or is 22 OK?

When I do them insulated the inside is 1/4" and the outside is 3/16. It might be a little thick but when the inside and outside are put together I don't worry about the inner moving and bending the outside box. Sometimes roads can be rough and that's when strength is everything.

On the box smokers that I have built I used 20 and 22 also, then my buddy has a shop and he beaded the panels to stiffen them up. Worked great.
