Built a Ugly drum smoker last weekend, using an old drum and old weber kettle and old pressure washer cart, did a burn in sat night before I did a turkey sunday.. I decided to make a fire box in it to ease cleaning, worked pretty good.
I will make it pretty later once all the bugs are worked out.

Cool! Interesting fire box design. I'm anxious to see how it performs.

Sweet lookin' cooker there! Nice work :thumb:

Clever thought with the firebox. I'm also anxious to see how it performs.

It worked really well, only issue was I did a turkey and wanted to cook at 300 or so and with it wide open it would only get to 250 or so. Had to crack the door so it will get two more vents. Ill put a shelf on it and do some cosmetic work.

The fire box is capped at the rear but I left 2 inches at top for exh and added two half moon slots at the side so its even going up.:decision: I had originally planned to just make a simple one but this wasnt too hard since I have this scrap laying around(structural steel fab shop)

The 10x12 tube is 3/8 wall so once it gets hot it maintains temp pretty good no fluctuations.

I love your build, but is it REALLY a uds? it does have a diffuser in it. Or is that for another thread : D? Just poking fun.

How big is the fire basket?

Fire basket is 18x10x6, yeah I thought of making it real ugly and putting some deisel stickers and such but Im gonna blast it and paint it black. The lid had a big ole dent from my sandrail, used to stick it on the trailer and took it to dunes for yrs(its the heavier gage weber)

Nice thing is it maneuvers well.

The lack of enough intake to get up to temperature is a very good sign that you have solved the potential leaky door issue. This is going to be one sweet UDS once you add the extra intakes.

Way cool man! Is the bottom of the charcoal basket raised up a bit to let the ash fall out? Otherwise i think the as may choke your fire a little bit. If not, you could cut some xpando to fit in the charcoal basket, to make a false bottom of sorts, a few inches up from the bottom of it.

Might be tough down the road cleaning grease out of the bottom of that thing.

And .. you can use it as a stick burner if you want!

All in all a great idea and good execution. Please do post how this thing cooks and how the cleaning etc. works out.
