Default Quick UDS building question.

I'm out in the garage right now making my basket. But my question is how high off the bottom of the barrel does the grate need to be. I know the lower the grate is, the lower the cook grate can be in the barrel. I'm working with a 34 inch barrel. Thanks, Jason.

Ideally, you just want the rack at least 24" above the coals.

I love the basket. One i just made i put it 5" off the bottom, i figure the more air the better... all i know is it gets smoking hot!

As far as distance goes my experience tells me it's not important how many inches the grates are from the basket. Mine range from 8"( in my mini) to about 20" in my UDS.... my middle size might be like 16".

Mine are 1/1/2 - 2 inches above the bottom of the barrel. I assume you mean the charcoal grate. No problems with airflow or ash.

Thank you cheap beer. That's about what I was thinking. 1 1/2 inches off the bottom. Thanks.

FWIW... mine is 3 inches off of the bottom of the barrel. Works for me!

I like 3-4" so I still got airflow after a lot of ash has fallen.

Yea minimum of 4", just because something will work at 2 doesn't mean it's optimal. The less restrictive will perform better.

I know now for a fact higher is better if you want a hot clean burning fire.

Well if you guys think that the 1 1/2" is too short, I can make it a inch taller pretty easily. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Make them higher. Less restrictive airflow will ABSOLUTELY be better for a burn. If it's easy to redo then i would.

The amount of ash you get will depend on the fuel you plan to use. If you use briquettes you will get a lot more ash than if you burn lump. Even using briquettes I have not had issues but if you want to raise it another inch or two it will not hurt anything.

Well I think I will make it taller. I might get some more stock and cut those off and start fresh.
