Michelle - LunchLady just posted her scores on the NEBS bulletin board. What do you think about this?

this is what our brisket got at oinktoberfest...you will all get a
good laugh at this, I am sure...

989 753 999 999 999 888 for a grand total 173.7142

Steve, I was thinking....super mega?....how does that happen?
Thank goodness they throw out the low.

Judge # 2 is an Idiot!!!!!! That's enough to piss ya off!!!

I would hope Judge #2 got an invitation to a conversation with the contest rep! Holy cow!

I am trying to think of any plausible explanation for this. Nothing comes to mind. (Three 999 is just fantastic in any case)

Is it possible the piece they pulled to judge 'broke' or tore' or was incomplete or something? Did they present just slices?

Looks familiar....seen a few of those myself this year...

Either one certified judge at the table...or five certified judges at the table.

He..He..He

just for clarification...we did slices and burnt ends. In my honest opinion, each slice was as good as another, moisture and tenderness-wise, (although obviously you can't eat them or you couldn't turn them in) and the burnt ends got the seal of approval from Rich Decker of Lost Nation, who has more first place briskets than most teams. I was thinking that the table captain should have asked that judge about it, but I never talked to the reps afterwards, I didn't really see those individual scores until we were driving to the Falls on Sunday.
Why?...you ask...I was a little busy calling everyone on this planet to tell them that we finally made it to the 'grown-up table'. I think the funniest part was that after they called us for GC, not only were we absolutely mobbed by so many people congratulating us that I couldn't even SEE my man, G, but I realized suddenly that I didn't need to run up to Linda and Jerry Mullane to get our scoresheet to find out where we placed! That was very strange, lemme tell ya. It is a habit I would love to have to break.
We are formulating an article for the NEBS website with all the juicy details of an incredible weekend. I'll let y'all know when it gets posted.

...again...THANK YOU Oinktoberfest and ALL our BBQ buds!!!!!

Thank god they drop the lowest scrore

I'll never be able to figure out judges. I have judged a few times
just not lately. Too much fun to cook.. I always ask what the other
judges thought of what we just eat and some were out in left field from
what I just ate. Some were right there with what I thought.. Some judges
think it's their sworn duty to be hard on the teams. My thoughts are does
it make me want to take another bite? I am not one to be able pick out
every spice you put in your rub. I taste how well did it work with this piece of meat. But rememeber everyone has a different in what they like. Who
knows what he/she was thinking? I heard most of the judges were
newbe's took the class thursday night. Not saying that's good or bad..
They were all virgins at Lake Placid and the scores were pretty close
across the table. They were trying to let judges write comment cards at
NEBS events last year.. But I think KCBS told them to stop it. Not that all
comments helped at all.. Like too much pepper in your rub.. But that rub
didn't have any pepper.?? More judges should cook with a team or two. I
know two judges that mentored in lowell ma. this year and I could tell right
off they had a new respect for the teams.. Hope they will remember next
time they judge. As for the judge with the 753 score, wait till you have
to eat some really shitty brisket and you will be longing for some of that
lunchmeat brisket you thought sucks.. Opps.. I am very greatful that
we have judges who are willing to come and take an afternoon to tell us
how we are cooking. The more they judge and if they have cooked the
more they do understand and appreciate what it takes to try and make
good BBQ. I was supposed to a lurker so please let me shut up.

P.S. any spelling or grammar mistakes I make, Please understand I am a

Sully, congratulations again, you guy's have been so close so many times I'm thrilled to be at the contest where you finally broke your cherry. Oinktoberfast was an awesome contest, very well run and they know how to take care of the cooks.

I got a weird score on my brisket 9-4-8, oh well. My brisket deserved to place where it did at 10th.

Good luck at Douglas.

hey...Gary just posted our pictures of Oinktoberfest....here is the link, and , yes, there is a picture of the brisket box...it is the back side of it, but it is there.... lunchlady

I'm a little scared in asking this question but...

What is the backside of a brisket?

Backside of the Brisket

I think she meant the back side of the turn in box..
it was not faced as it would be to the judges...
