Yeah, it sold in 12 hours to a fellow CBBQA member! I had 3 responses from Craig's List but it was already sold so I pulled it!

Wow, this thread is great. I think I may have found a 55 gallon drum, the only problem is it previously contained methanol. Would this drum be safe to use after a few good burns or should I avoid it all together and continue to search for something food grade. Thanks.

Indy Fuel...!!!

If it was pure methanol (ie...no additives), I would assume it would burn completely and leave no residue at all. However, I'll leave the official/final word on that to the experts.

I Emailed my Pop for his input (Chem Eng), so hopefully he answers in a fairly timely manner.

Personally I would look around for a bakery or cookie factory and try to get one that had food stuff in it. They are around.

Isn't the result of Methanol combustion, Carbon Dioxide and Water (steam)? I think the determining factor would be if all the Methanol would be burned away or otherwise evaporate...

Not quite as exciting excercise as the plane on the conveyor belt, but what the *heck*...

Thanks for the replies, it seems all the bakeries in my area (south eastern VA) have never heard of a 55 gallon steel drum. I will keep my eyes on the lookout. With all these great looking UDS smokers on here I want to make mine asap and get er cooking.

I don't know if the methanol would be as toxic as the food grade painted liner I burnt out. I think food grade only refers to the lining in solid form- not under heat. And yes I did hAVE two bigass fires to try to remove this stuff and got down to bare metal.

Well, after a week of sea trials...the Amp Energy, National Guard #88 N8man Drumpit clone is ready for final completion. Held real constant (and adjustable) temps...more~so with briqs than with lump. No surprise there, same happens with my other drum.

Only real diff from the drumpit is the exhaust is 1 1/2" Dia. instead of 2" and is a few inches shorter with corresponding shorter intake (I ain't six foot six...). Also used, 3/4" nips instead of 1".

Now just gotta disassemble, burn out again, metal prep, #88 paint job, reasemble, buy a Weber lid handle (Westlakes was out of 'em) and send it on a one~way ticket to Talladega, Alabama. Gonna try the sheet magnets too instead of a ball valve or fabricating a vent cover. Though I may send down an intake ball valve as an added sales feature...

N8man's got him a real good design there...(hoists beverage in air...(coffee))!!! I'll probably build another on for myself. But...some lucky unwashed, drunken race fan down at 'Dega sure is gonna like this one!!!

Oh yes!! Just returned from the MIL's dropping off a drum for her and picking up the last one she burned out for me. I'll start cleaning it up and building next weekend.

Would you guys burn it once if it had soy bean oil in it? I would think that would be perfect for the first smoke and its alreay black so i could paint it as needed.
