From the KCBS rules:
"5. Fires shall be of wood, wood pellets or charcoal. Gas and electric grills shall not be permitted. Propane is permitted as fire starter, provided that the competition meat is not in/on the cooking device. Electrical accessories such as spits, augers, or forced draft are permitted." Tragers and Fast Eddy Cookshacks use pellets for heat. The pellets are real wood. On the top right of the forum page is a link to KCBS. Quick way to get there. TIM

You will see alot of folks cooking on Traegers at comps if you are interested in thier setups. In the midwest, you can regularly see Dry Creek BBQ, or Smokin Guns, among others using Traegers. The last 4 contests of this year, I have been using a borrowed FEC-100 (Fast Eddy) Pellet burner.

A little history,
I have only ever entered one competition (amateur) I one first place in that comp and the prize was a Traeger grill. Traeger has offered to bring a second grill to my first pro competition for me to use, I want to use their grill since the offer is so generous and I do like the grills but was wondering about KCBS rules, even though they don't apply in this circuit.

Traegers are very fine units and have been the keystones of many good cooks due to the thermostatically controlled pellet auger system which is completely allowed in KCBS contests. The only concerns that you might have is if the power should fail, so does your smoker. And having mechanical parts, you maybe should think about carrying some spare parts in case of an unexpected break down.
