Default keeping rodents away

I've got a large field across from my house and I often see field mice in the area. I understand that mice will make a home out of anywhere so why not a bbq. i was thinking about putting some moth balls or ammonia in my lower cabinet, however with food being cooked just above, i'm not sure this is a good idea. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Around here the snakes do a pretty good job of keeping the mice away. Some don't see that as a plus like I do though...

I have a very small backyard but it backs up to a hedgerow. My biggest foe is squirrels. Everything of mine closes up fairly firm. But my wife has a gas grill that she likes. It doesn’t close up very well and every winter we have a squirrel nest in there. I have no problem with that. When I open it up, I just bang on it a little and then destroy the nest. I’m just wondering how long it will take for a snake will move in for a meal and a comfortable home. As long as I’m not surprised, I can handle it. But, what if the wife beats me to the clean up. I’ll probably have to clean her up too. And no telling what condition she has left the grill or snake in.

The only thing I have found to keep rodents out of dark places is a light. Get a trouble light and put a LED bulb in it and place inside your cabinet and run 24/7.
