Yet another lump charcoal review
I have been lurking for quite a while and figured it was about time I posted. I got in to smoking about 2 years ago when the girlfriend bought me a Weber Performer 22.5, then last year she got me a Cajun Bandit which got me smoking all the time. After 2 years I have tried every lump charcoal I could get my hands on and thought I would post what I have learned.
B&B...I won't even use it as a last resort. It burns way too hot and fast. By shooting an 8-10 foot shower of sparks it does make for a great firework substitue. Cowboy...used as a last resort. By far the most inconsistent lump I have ever used. I have had bags that were either tiny little pieces or tree trunks. Royal Oak...good middle of the road charcoal. Good flavor, decent burn time and readily available everywhere. The only issue is that it's typically medium to small pieces. Big Green Egg...its best pieces of Royal Oak. Same flavor but typically medium to large chunks. The only real issue is cost, and the last bag I had burned really hot and fast. It may have been an old bag though. Wicked Good Weekend Warrior...absolutely love it. Great flavor, even temperature, long burn time and all medium to large pieces. I also like that Ace Hardware does free shipping to store.

Three comments:
I haven't used B&B so no opinion on that, but pretty much agree with your evaluation of the others. Cowboy seems to be better than it was, but this just might be part of their inconsistency. Marry that girl.

We tried Cowboy last weekend and I did not like it at all! I had hot pieces all over my driveway from it sparking and a piece actually got my foot (yes, I had on open shoes...my mistake). I ordered some from ACE of the Wicked Good and am excited to try it this weekend as I've heard great things about it.

I think the way the bags are handled by the store has more effect on the size/quality of the lump than the manufacturer. IMHO.

I really like B&B myself - the sparking doesn't bug me too much. WG has gotten to be my other go-to. I wish I could get Ozark Oak out here. I ordered some online once to check it out - loved it, but way too pricey with shipping and all that.

Re: Yet another lump charcoal review
B&B is my go to lump I buy the 20# bags for 14 bucks at academy sports, I've had only 1 bag pop like the 4th of July and it was from a 10# bag and cold out. That same month I bought a bag of Ozark oak and had the same firework show, it took a long time to lite in the chimney to and at dollar per # didn't set well with me. RO is good but I have only found it at wallyworld and its in small shards not chunks and falls through grates and baskets. WG is good stuff I've used it once and still have the rest of the 22# bag left - what I used for a 6h pork butt cook on the akorn, it is pricey 21 bucks for 22# I guess in some cases you get what you pay for.

I've never seen that problem with B&B before. B&B is one of the higher end lump brands. I'm guessing you got a very, very unusual bag. Looks spot on with the others though.

I'll stick with the USA RO lump.
For me the WG is not worth the $ at my Ace hardware (the only place that carries it here). Can't speak to any of the others.

Cowboy is the only lump I've used. Probably used 2-3 bags. It was always filled with chunks the size of a brick or it was dust. I went back to kingsford.
