I'm SLOWLY working on a vertical offset, kind of like a Bandera. My questions regarding the firebox only are...
1. If I go uninsulated, what's the minimum thickness I need?
2. If insulated, what should the internal and external thicknesses be?
3. Can I use fire brick as the insulation? I have quite a bit so don't need to buy any.
4. Can sand be used as insulation(a friend wanted to know)?

Once I finally get going on this thing, I'll hopefully be able to add some pictures.

I am no expert so just my thoughts....
1. minimum of 1/4" thick steel
2. same as 1
3. yes
4. yes

hope this helps some. I have seen quite a few offsets and most all use a minimum of 1/4" steel. I have heard of using fire bricks as well as sand for insulation although have not seen any using either. Hope this helps some. remember, google is your friend.

There's a thread on the original MOAB... a Klose built Mother Of All Banderas.

The specs start @ post #10 under that thread.

Give Bigdog a buzz... he's the current caretaker of that pit.

If you have firebricks you can go with lot less thickness. But 1.4 would be the min I would use if nobricks
