Putting together Mini WSM #2
A good friend of mine wanted a Mini WSM of his own after he saw mine in action. I agreed to put it together for him after he gathered all the parts...
I learned a few things after building mine that allowed me to make this one a little nicer. I used a 1" metal hole saw bit to perforate the bottom of the tamale pot. It makes much cleaner holes than the step bit in the aluminum pot. I also set his grill rack 4 1/2" deep instead of 3 1/2" which should allow adequate clearance for a whole chicken or a large butt... He elected not to go with an external thermometer mounted on the pot so I installed an extra NM/SE UF Cable Connector I had on hand so he can run digital temp probes inside if he wants to without having to go through the lid...

Very nice. I am getting close to building myself a mini WSM.
I picked up a used Smokey Joe from CL for $5.00, and I have a similar NM/SE UF Cable Connector (that I was going to use on my Char-Griller but didn't have the right size drill bit), and I forgot to buy the washer for it. I just need to get the Tamale Pot, washer for the connector, bolts and nuts, and some paint. I will probably pick up a thermometer too to install it, but I'll mostly be using a digital thermometer. I can't wait to get going on it. Thanks for sharing!

The cable connector takes a 13/16" hole. I did use the step bit to make that after drilling a small pilot hole.

Another fine job. I still don't have my pot yet. I'll get off my lazy arse one of these days.

Did you just spray the pot with some high heat paint or did you put something on before that?

I put some of the 2000 degree primer on it and then used the glossy engine black 500 degree paint.
