Knife set suggestions
I mentioned to my wife that I wanted a new knifes. She tells me to put it on "the list" for the holidays. So now the question is what should I but on the list? What is a good set to get?

I got this set several years ago as a gift and they have turned out to be of very good quality. The Mrs may have a problem with the name unless she has a good sense of humor.

My recommendation is to NOT get a set. Find some knives that you really like, get the 8" chef's knife, a 4" paring knife, and a bread knife. If you want or need more than that, get them as you need them.
I recently started purchasing the Zwilling Henckels Pro line and love them.

I use a Cutco set and like them very much! Getting individual pieces you like works well too!

I would also recommend not getting a set like JMSetzler said even though this is what we did. We use mostly the Chef's knife, Santoku, Paring, and Bread knives. We really like our Shun classics though. Very, very sharp.

I agree with the suggestion to start with your workhorse knives first, but knives have a way of multiplying over time. If you are serious about making an investment and getting what you want, go to a place that has a large assortment like a Williams-Sonoma or a specialty place where you can try a bunch of different brands. Put them in your hand and see what feels best. I love Shun knives, but they have a very unique grip that others can’t stand. There is a world of difference between the feel of the Japanese knives and the European knives like Wusthof or Henckel, not to mention all the different grip styles each of them offers. If you want to buy American, I would look hard at either LampsonSharp or A.G. Russell. Enjoy the search.

Go Kiwi... they are very inexpensive, but they hold an edge beautifully...and if you lose/ruin one, you ain't out much. I buy 4 or 5 at a time and keep a couple in my comp. knife box and some in the house and usually end up giving a couple away to people who try them out. Seriously... I love them and haven't touched any of my other knives in years.
Order a couple and if you don't like them, you're only out a couple of bucks... http://www.wokshop.com/HTML/products...wi-knives.html

I am sure I can find them at one of the Asian stores here in town. For the price it is worth trying.
