Default CL scored weber lid, how to paint it?

hey folks,
I scored a weber from CL and I did have to flatten the rim out so it would sit better. It would fit before, but kinda balanced as others have said.

I do want to paint it, but I tired to scratch the enamel to aid in adhesion but that stuff just laughed. Can these lids be just painted over?

Also, what are you guys doing for a better seal from the lid to the barrel? I dont want to cut anything, Im talking in terms of silicone, non-fiberglass stove gasket etc..

Thanks.

I would love to hear the response to this too. I am planning out my UDS. Do most paint their UDS as well or is it more in style to have it look as ugly as possible.

Depends on if your wife wants a rusty barrel on the patio or not :D I plan on hitting my current flat black barrel with some colorful gloss this week.

painting a weber lid is going to require proper prep. You need to get the enamel off to get paint to stick, i'd recommend either having it media blasted than painted, but I would opt for powder coat, providing it'll stand up to the heat

I did what you did with a Weber top: Flattened the edge and re-formed to fit the drum. After that process, the porcelain was chipped, cracked and missing from the edge. Just took a wire brush to get rid if the loose stuff and then brushed on some Rustoleum Grill paint. On the edge only, not the whole top. Still there two years later, I have touched it up once though.

I painted mine with a high temp engine with no prep at all about 8-10 months ago. It doesn't have the luster that it did but this was not a high gloss paint. So far it's holding up just fine.I've cooked on it 12-15 times.
Photo was taken during 1st cook.

Jim, that is a great looking UDS. I never thought about engine paint. Great idea.

Mr. I ordered the seal for the large BGE, installed it on my yardsale dome lid after I flatened the lip out. The yd sale grill had a latch that I put on the UDS and I can lock the lid down to a real good seal.

You can paint the chipped area with a high temp paint. When I made my UDS, I used a grinder to take about half the rim off, all the way around the drum. The lid fits perfect and I didn't have to flatten it out. The drum is no weaker from doing this. Just a thought, if you make another one.

i get a little leakage around the lid but quite honestly I don't worry about it. After all you leave the top vent wide open.
