If you are looking for something that will smoke, grill, and provide a high temp sear, check out a kamado style cooker. I personally have a BGE but I really like Kamado Joe as well. $450 might not get you all of the way there, but you can always check out craigslist and Facebook.

Default Keep the UDS, and make it look prettier!

If you get rid of the UDS, a Pitboss will be a good option. I have two, an 820 model (5 years old) and a copperhead. If you weren't concerned about searing food, the copperhead is a "pretty" replacment for the UDS. But the barrel types would be better for everything including a sear. They should both be in your price range.

If you wanted to ditch the UDS and stick with charcoal, an acorn or another type of metal kamado should be in your price, and will do everything you want.

Buy a dolly/hand truck and tuck the cooker away when you're not using it.

Sounds like the old UDS does not go with the new decor...happens.

If you are absolutely committed to keeping the wife - looks like you are getting a new cooker. There's worse things in life. I'm not sure there's a $450 cooker I'd rather have than my 55 or 30 gallon UDS's tho.

Wish my wife told me she was tired of looking at my rag tag assortment of home made cookers and said "Baby- if you get rid of all these, you can get a Shirley Patio- how would that be?"

Mine wouldn't stand for a drum either. I get it, appearances mean a lot. We bargain with each other on a lot of things. Once I bought my second smoker, she wanted the first one gone. Eventually, she bought me the Blackstone griddle on terms that I'd sell the first smoker. Since the 2nd one really did make it redundant, I was fine with selling one. And our yard is pretty small, so the cooking area looks a lot better this way.

Why don't ya try a different approach...

Make her a fine dinner on that uds of yers.
Get a nice bottle of wine...
Toss down a blue pill and make her forget about it...

Rinse and repeat as needed....
Whatever solution ya find...it ought ta be satisfying ta both, right?

If I lived in New Mexico I wouldn't cook near as much as I do.

I threw out my old gasser when we moved, so I am considering a pellet grill. I like to Sous Vide steaks, so I am interested in a unit that will smoke, grill, and provide a high temp sear.

I had a friend with a Camp Chef with a sear box and he really liked it, but the price is a bit more than my budget.

I'd like to stay around $450 or under?

Any recommendations? Is there anything good that meets my criteria?
A new wife, perhaps?

Just moved back....yes, there are plenty of options, for sure!

I need to restock the freezer from the move, so I'm looking forward to when the roasting begins at the farmer's markets next month!

Meanwhile, I found an Albertson's in Santa Fe that frequently has some good looking (and floppy) choice briskets for $1.77/lb.

When we finish our remodel and get the stuff out of storage, maybe "one last" brisket on the UDS will change her mind.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to get a pellet grill, but only to go alongside my UDS.

Bingo.
If my wife asked me to get rid of a cooker I liked I'd kick her to the curb faster than I could start a thread asking about what to do
