Where to eat BBQ around Asheboro-Lexington NC
When football season ends the wife has a trip planned for the family to go to the big zoo in Asheboro NC. After a quick google search I found this is within 20 miles of Lexington NC. We will eat either a late lunch or early supper around there. I am looking for some good Q joints in that area if anyone has any advice. TIA.

Please, please do yourself a favor and head straight down hwy 8 to Cooks BBQ Order the coarse chopped pork bbq and hushpuppies. Lots of other BBQ joints in Lexington that are more tourist friendly, but Cooks is by far my favorite and remains old school

The Original - Lexington Barbecue, aka "Honeymonk's) - Link to my August 2018 visit thread.
You need a large chopped tray and a large Cheerwine. Get a pound of 'cue to go with you (Freezes well, if it makes it that far), and the Smokehouse Sauce is also a fan favorite.

I'll second Lexington Barbecue. Pork shoulder, and only pork shoulder. Even if you eat somewhere else, I'd recommend picking up a pound or two to take home with you.

I've done the Lexington BBQ a time or two or three.... Had the sliced and the coarse pulled and they are VERY different products and both are very good. You always hear about the chopped. I would recommend trying both. I would not put them in the category of touristy. They are very much a diner and when we've been there, the clientele have been locals as they were friends and family of the waitstaff.

Lexington Barbecue is the only place I go when visiting my relatives in Lexington, NC. Great food and good service. And not far off of I-85. And after dinner, take US-64 to I-85 and fill up the gas tank at the Holly Grove Gulf station. Tell Neal one of his brother-in-laws sent you.

Lexington BBQ is okay...
Honestly, just ok. There are several BBQ joints in Lexington that are better, just not better known. I grew up 40 minutes from there, that’s my stomping grounds. It would not be my first, second or third stop..maybe 4th..

You are missing out on some of the better joints then. Speedys & Cooks are both better BBQ, IMHO.

Thanks John, I'll have to give them a try next time I'm in the area. Is the Q similar to that of Lexington? Is the style regional? I found Lexington BBQ unique from other places I've been in the country and even in North Carolina.

Lexington BBQ is known for their minced BBQ and they do a decent job, but I find it to be bit bland. I think there is a bit more character to the other places I mentioned. They all cook similar, pork shoulder over a direct wood fire, but they way it is treated afterwards seems to be the difference.....at least to me. I’m also not a fan of their hushpuppies, which is almost as important as the BBQ.

I knew, y'all wouldn't let me down. Will do some more research on the two places and update my decision. I have seen Lexington and Cook's on some tv shows talking about BBQ. Thanks again, y'all rock!
