Removing top from drum and then paint????'s

I am going to build two UDS's. I found drums that have the top on them that held alcohol so no liner to burn out. What is the best way to remove the top? Can it then be used as a lid or will I need a Weber kettle lid?

Also, since I do not need to burn it out it would be a real chore to remove the exterior paint. Can I just paint over what is there? I see lots of threads where they put the UDS together with the original paint and then in the final pic it has been repainted. Do you guys remove the original paint?

Thanks for the info!! Going to buy the hardware today.

I used a right angle grinder with a thin blade and cut right under the rim. It will make a good lid. As far as painting goes clean the outside real well, maybe wipe it down with mineral spirits or lacquer thinner, let it air dry good and paint away.

I agree, save the lid and keep the paint as is!

I use a scroll saw with a metal blade...just drill a pilot hole and follow the lip around the inner edge. :p
