Blood, sweat, and tears, and when that gives out I go next door and borrow the neighbors wood-splitter.

I ether get kiln dried hickory or pecan already split or rent a log splitter for $100 per weekend when cleaning up oak around the farm. Splitting mauls and axes work fine to get wood to size for the RF offset, but I'll also use a power mitre saw to cut splits down smaller for the vertical woodburner, Weber or mini-wsm. This works great on smaller splits:
http://www.estwing.com/ao_fireside_f...tting_tool.php PS: I also "use" my 19 year old 240lb son for wood splitting chores with great results!

I wish this was how I split mine...
In all seriousness though check out the lever axe, interesting design that seems very efficient.

I buy it already split in 24" lengths. I use my bandsaw to cut it in half or thirds if it is a thick split. I can cut enough wood for several cooks in a few minutes.

A maul. I have used a recip saw to shorten a few long pieces when I was too lazy to get out the chain saw.
