I just found a guy who sells Pecan Shells (not hulls) for $0.10 per pound, in 70 pound bags. I was wondering if the pecan shell smoke is about the same as pecan wood smoke. I have never tried the shells. I will mostly be using the shells in the UDS with the minion method.

Here is a link to an n8man thread that also talks about pecan shells but, does not compare the two together.

I think burning purely shells would be labor intensive. If I'm in a rush I'll add some to a little smoke box using the gasser and they just don't last long. They do impart some good flavor though.
