The rule of thumb is to buy what will fulfill your cooking needs, plus a little extra room for extra guests....

They are a good starter smoker and the have an easy payment plan.

I would definatly go for the lil tex with a family of four otherwise he will be pretty limited on what he can cook at one time. Plus the extra size will help with keeping food out of the hotspots.

What type of food is he looking at smoking?

I have a Lil Texas Elite - it does ok for my family of 3 plus usually I feed friends at the same time.

I have done 3 ribs and a butt at the same time and on different occasions managed 2 get 2 briskets on at the same time.

Overall great cooker.
Pros - set it and forget it
Pros - I haven't noticed much in the way of hot spots

Cons - make sure to empty the pellet feeder after cooking if you have humidity or moisture in your area otherwise could bind up the feeder.
Cons - Did notice that using a small water pan helped me get better moisture and ironically bark
Cons - will need a blanket or their insulation kit to keep it cooling off fast in rain or wind.
