My mother used to pick tomatoes out of the garden and eat them like apples.....I could not stop gagging at the site of it.

Useless factoid: In Europe, not so long ago, tomatoes were thought to be apples. They were called Pomi d' oro (Apples of Gold or Gold Apples), which became the Italian word "pomodoro".

Tomatoes were also thought to be poisonous, as they are members of the nightshade family.
