Home grown charcoal
So I want to start making my own charcoal. I saw a few good methods in INTERNET. The one I like uses a 30 gal drum inside a 55 gal drum, but I'm having trouble finding used drums, especially the 30 gal.
Any thoughts other than buying new which would cost about $250.00? Where do people get the drums for a UDS?

I called Nashville barrel and drum. They were of no help.
Won't sell to individuals.

Do a search for oil/lubricant distribution companies. We have a few that service small automotive repair and oil change places.
Many of the specialty products they repackage or distribute come in smaller barrels. If they don't have anything empty, they will likely point you to one of their customers for an empty. Please share the process of making your own lump once you get started!!

Try some of your local automotive repair shops.. A lot of them have 55gal drums that oil comes in and smaller 30gal drums that gear oil and etc come in.. They will be closed top drums but u can prolly get them for little to nothing. If u were closer i could help u out we go thru about 5 to 6 drums of oil a month here at work.

Just get a stickburner. Halfway through, it makes lump charcoal.

And it smokes your meat at the same time. Pretty convenient.

Try a local scrap yard. We own a scrap yard and get good, unlined drums from time to time. As a matter of fact, I am taking 2 home tonight, one for me and one for a fellow brethren. They at most will be paying 9 or 10 cents per pound to get them and an average drum weighs about 32# so they are only invested around $3 in each one.

I have made my own charcoal. I use just one barrel stuffed with hardwood and seal the lid on top. The top i have a few holes punched so the steam can escape. Place the barrel onto some bricks so the fire can burn under the barrel. Let it burn! first there will be tonnes of smoke, then flames will shoot out the holes, when the flames stop, its done. Good luck.
