Also Phrasty, I couldn't wait to get a fire in mine once it had taken the basic shape of a smoker...much like the current state of your build. I filled the smoke chamber with wood and set a BIG fire. Burnt most of the paint off, then had it sand blasted.

If you blast yours, be ready to put at least a coat of paint on it same day. If you don't, you'll have to deal with surface rust the next day...

For those contemplating a build..... Go for it!
I'd never touched a welder or cutting torch prior to building this...

That cooks this....

Which gets me a lot more visits from my brothers...that's them in the pic drinking my Rolling Rock and waiting on my BBQ!
Thanks Steve. I was thinking about doing the doors like you have them there.. Thought that you can't open both individually (either you open the right or both. That build looks great man. Same 120Gal. tank... Is it hard to move around on that stand? Looks like it's putting out some great food too!

Steve, what size tank was that on your build?
Thanks bredrin! A bit anxious for the sandblasting as well! looking forward to it! I believe Steve's tank is the same as mine. A 120 gallon.

Cheers

Man Phrasty!! I'm so jealous of you! I've been begging my wife to let me build one but she said "I don't won't you to get blown up"
It looks very nice! I can't wait to see the finished product!

Phrasty your right about the doors. The right door opens or both. I don't mind that myself, and as far as the temp recovering quickly after the doors have been open... Hasn't been a problem.

As far as the size of my tank, I think its probably 100 gallons. It's an air compressor tank. Didn't have to worry about any explosion problems when I cut into it! (Not that I would worry too much about it once it was purged.)

As far as the smoker being hard to move around.... Well, it does weigh 620 lbs. however, I can load it and unload it on my utility trailer by myself. I originally had hard rubber tires on it. Would have been better off using logs and animal fat to move it! So I put the pneumatic tires on it.... made a world of difference

Wish I could be there for the inaugural smoke in Jamaica.... I know it will be world class Q!

Hey everyone... I feel like I owe you guys an update!! It's been a long day so I'm gonna make this quick. Had a freak lightening storm for a couple hours which kinda messed up the day (build-wise.) Didn't get done as much as I wanted.

I've been working on the Coal grate/basket a bit. I still have a little more work to do on it. I cut the internal baffles out of a sheet of the 1/4" metal. Got the smoker raised up on temporary legs and bolted in. Marked out the opening for the FB and cut it out, and Fitted the FB into the cut. I have a little cleaning up and grinding to do, but God willing it should fit up quite nicely! Should have another update for you tomorrow. Have a blessed weekend everyone!

Cheers.

That's great to know bredrin, I'm also doing a grill for my neighbor that's pretty farkin heavy and it has to go on wheels... so I'll keep that in mind.

And of course there'll be pics of the first blaze so just in case you cant make it you'll still see it!

Cheers

Wassup guys... well I been fighting the rain all farkin week! As 3:00 comes it's PISSING with rain, thunder, lightening... the works. Not quite the environment to weld in! However, I did get some work done today and I'm glad to officially say from this point on its just details (minus the obvious trailer problem... or lack thereof) So we got the firebox attached today and it went flawlessly! Was a bit nervous about it fitting snugly together, but it was like "buttah" Today we got the firebox on, cut the FB-SC hole and welded in the FB deflector. I'm getting there! Theoretically she can be smoked on now... Tomorrow I wanna deal with a bunch of the details:
• Exhaust chokes
• Finish up the coal grate
• Food grate hold downs
• Cleaning up welds
• Overall grinding of edges and smoothing out
• Do some welding touch-ups
• Tuning plate slides & push handles
• and hopefully light a nice farkin fire in there to loosen up the paint for grinding (not gonna get to sand blast!!!) Yeah that's gonna be fun!
•*and eventually I need to get some metal legs on her...
Ok guys here are the pics to date. What you guys think?

Cheers

Just thinking here.... but are you going to secure the tuning plates somehow, or just let them slide? If you find a trailer (and maybe a forklift) that you want to mount it to or carry it on, it might help to prevent the plates from moving after you have figured out the tuning.

I am sure you have it worked out though, it is really coming along.

did I miss an angled deflector plate from firebox into the cook chamber? Or do you think one is not needed with the tuning plates?? This is really an impressive build! Nice job!

Thanks Frog... No I am not planning on securing the tuning plates. I think the point of the tuning plates is so they can be moved and you can direct the heat where you want it, or you can even out the entire smoker. Example: If im doing chicken and ribs I can make the food grates by the FB a bit hotter to do the chicken and still have the ribs side not as hot as to not cook them as fast. Well that's my thoughts in theory. But no... not welding them in... gonna put them on a slide rail.

Thanks gtsum, I think the baffle helps a little but it's not the most important thing. As long as your tuning plates and be butted up to your FB with as little gap as possible you should be good. You do however want to have something right up against your FB to take that "edge" off the not-so-direct-but-still-direct heat..

Cool

Greetings guys... We got in a good amount of work on the smoker today. All detail stuff so it doesn't look that different, but the details starting to come together nicely . We got the choke for the exhaust cut, assembled & installed. Then fabricated & welded on the handles for the food grates. Got the slides for the tuning plates in as well. The coal tray now has a tighter mesh on there so small coals wont fall thru easily. Started cleaning up the welds around the smoker as well as finishing up the door welds and smoothing those out... All in all a productive day. Hopefully I can to a good burn out to loosen the paint then grind and paint early this week. Can't wait! Kinda want to just light her up and throw on some ribs!!! My feet are killing me now tho but the day was worth it! Now on to the build Pron. Let me know what you all think.

Cheers guys!
