I need to get a dutch oven for my barbecue beans. Does anyone know of a particular store or website where I can get a great deal?

Amazon has Lodge cast iron dutch ovens for a pretty good price. Free shipping on most models. :icon_cool

I don't have any good ideas about where to buy them cheap but I have two Hodge dutch ovens and they are really well made. I have a 10" and a 12". The 10" is nice for side dishes and small cooks. The extra space in the 12" is useful for baking. I am thinking about getting a larger oven for my next cookout/party so I have good capacity without using both ovens.

You may be an old hand at dutch oven cooking but I'll offer this resource up anyway. This temperature guide has always served me well (courtesy of BSA Troop 2, Evans, Ga). http://www.troop-2.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=61&Itemid=53

We got a 6-1/2 qt. Tramontina DO at WalMart for $39. It was rated a best buy by one of the cooking magazines. It works just fine for us.

And it cleans up real easily.

cheapest one going is Harbor Freight's:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=44705

it's the kind with legs, although you can cut them off and sand it smooth if you want the other kind. They go on sale for like $16 regularly, plus if you know what you're doing it's easy to get a 15% off coupon good for one item.

I got one of those and seasoned it up. Heavy, but works OK.

Both of mine are HF DO's. I can attest that for that price they are dang good DO's. They season nicely, and have never let me down except for a cracked lid on one that was my fault. Only drawback coul dbe the legs, but you can position the legs to fit almost any grate. I've used it on the oven and even the Weber Kettle. You just need to rotate the DO so the legs slide into the grate. Other drawback is size. 6 Qt is big, but don't know if you need a larger sized one.
Course Lodge is Grandaddy of everything CI.

One of the Brethren that I know very well wrote an article in Issue 1 of Smoke Signals that has some info related to DO's.

Thanks everyone, the Harbor freight seems like the best deal. But I am weary of the legs. I think I'll order it anyway, thanks!

You might also want to consider a DO with a lip (flange) around the top if you want to use it for baking in the future. The lip is made to hold charcoal on the top so that you can bake at a more even temp.

With Lodge DO's the unit with the lip on the top are the "Camp" dutch ovens. I would also favor the model with deep sides for beans, chili and baking. Then pick pre-seasoned or not....You can easily season your own and avoid the additional $$.

Thanks for the help bros.

I ended up getting this one today. Lodge brand for 30 bucks. Superbowl barbecued beans here we come!!!

You can even flip the lid and use the inside as a skillet for making things like pancakes, heat up bread, torts, etc. I've made many pancakes on the inside of my DO lids. Very versatile.
Nice buy!

Lodge is the last major cast iron cookware company in the USA. They make a better product than any of the imported iron manufacturers. In my opinion Lodge DOs are well worth the few extra dollars they cost to keep this foundry operating, primarily, in the USA. Their pig iron and their entire enameled line are products of china already.

There are a lot of old, AMERICAN MADE,cast iron DOs and COs available at second hand stores, flea markets, estate sales, garage sales, and online auctions (my least recomended source), as well as CL.

Lodge's only american made copetition is the MACA.

If you want a campoven, the one with legs and a flat top go for Lodge. The older ones from griswold or Wagner are good but can be pricey because of collectors. If you want a Dutch oven, the one with a flat bottom and domed lid to use on your stove or grate, any of the older American mage ones are great and not very expensive. MACA are campovens but I think are made in India now.
