Default Need a Smoker Recommendation.

My Buddy really loves smoked meats and I usually bring a little tease when I smoke something. He really wants to get His own smoker though. I don't think He wants to spring for a pellet smoker so I thought I'd ask You Folks what would be a good smoker for a beginner. He would probably want one that would require the least attention next to a pellet smoker. Price is also an issue. Thanks!

Either make an Ugly Drum Smoker for under a hundred or a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker is what most here will tell you.

Does he have a Weber kettle? If I was forced to have only one grill/smoker it would be a kettle which can smoke very well with the right set up.

If I could have two, I would add the WSM or USD as Skidder suggests.

So what is a WSM?

Edit: I figured it out.

Agreed, the UDS. Inexpensive to make, extremely easy to cook on, makes excellent food.

I might have to look at the UDS. We have barrels at work as well as most of the parts. I can weld and work in the maint. shop. We have a plasma cutter and a wire feed welder. Since My Buddy is the Supervisor I shouldn't have to worry about getting caught doing government work. I'll find out if We are allowed to take those barrels since I think they send them back to the company we buy the oil from. BTW it's a food grade oil so no worries about weird chemicals.

If you haven't done so, read the UDS thread

http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...ly+Drum+Smoker

Then get back to us.

Weber Smokey Mountain, I love these smokers. Just picked up a traeger but still not convinced it's better than the WSM. It is very easy to use, stable, etc.. Only problem with them is size. Haven't tried 22" version. Buy one on CL for 50 or 60 bucks. Can find em alot.

He SmellsLike Smoke is correct if you have a Weber kettle you can grill and smoke. If $$ isn't an issue yeah hell go with what Umyaya said and get a great smoker like the Cookshack or a Backwoods or anything else for that matter but for a quick cheap smoker that you have all the tools to make for cheap go with the UDS.

Hydra I just saw my 1st. 22 WSM and holy crap is it big. Can I say crap? Yeah I can I just did. The thing is as big around as a truck tire and about 4 feet tall. I didn't think it would look so much bigger than the 18 but it does.

Although it costs quite a bit more than a WSM, it costs less than a pellet smoker, the Big Green Egg (or other ceramic) is extremely versatile.

With a plate setter and a few eggcessories, you can grill, smoke and bake. More I think about it, I amend my comment above. I would take a Large BGE if I could have only one outdoor cooker.
