Default Arepas

Decided to use up some pulled pork I had in the freezer with Arepas.

Masarepa corn flour, which is pre cooked, gets mixed with salt, baking powder and warm water.

Then fried..

Then topped with yummy goodness.

Enjoy!

Nice but not quite like the ones they make here. You need to get the size up a bit. Arepas are about 15 cm or 6 inches across. There is a little arepa cart that sets up over by the Rey Supermercado in Albrook that sells an arepa with pulled pork, chorizo, chicharone, queso, salsa, and some other things for $2.50. All you need to do is eat one and your arteries goes into instant coronary overload but they are SOOOOOOO good.

We eat arepas for breakfast a couple times a week. Lov'em..

These are about the size I get from the Colombian restaurants around here. Have any pics of what you get in Panama? I'd love to see them. I'm curious about the thickness as well.

Very nice cook and interesting discussion. I think I remember hearing or seeing somewhere "pulled pork stuffed" arepas?

The little cart is usually there between 2 and 6 pm on week days. Being a Catholic nation no one here works on Sunday if they can get away with it. I usually have my camera in the truck so if I am over that way I'll grab one so I can take a picture then I will feast out.

I don't know if the wife picked up any of the pre-made ones we get at the grocery today but I'll look in the fridge when I get another beer.

Hi Kirk,

Now I see the pics more clearly I can tell yout there is a Dutch thing we do with Self Raising Flour that comes out similar to that. We just call them "Fat Cakes" because of how they rise in the oil. We usually eat them with a Mince Curry. Those corn ones would probably be a lot better.

The arepas look great to me man!!! The arepas can me made in several different ways eg sweet, plain, cheesy etc. Different sizes as well. You can even stuff em like like a pita sandwich.
