You mentioned that it's heavy. Do you think it may still be somewhat green and not seasoned yet? More weight usually means higher moisture within.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the thought man. This stuff is 3 years old and has been in my garage for 2 years. The garage is on the moist side so I attribute the mould or whatever it is to that. When I said it was heavy I meant it was not a conifer....which I think? would be lighter. I used the wood today in the fireplace to create some coals for the offset smoker - I actually used hickory/cherry/jack daniels oak for the smoking wood. The cook is still underway - I am gonna make a detailed post of it with pictures. Heck here is one right now:

Internal temp on the butt is now about 158f.....the beans are done and tasting beauty.

If it helps..ashes are opposite... their branching or leaves will be opposite of each other from the main trunk..hickories and oaks are alternate..the leaves or branches form alternatively from each other..in georgia i use the acronym MADCAP buck for the opposite tree species..m for maple...a for ashes..d dogwood..cap for the family caprifolicaceae and buck for the buckeyes..and the rest of the trees are alternate..except for buttonbush which has a whorled pattern.

The one on the right is either maple or poplar.......I'm leaning toward poplar.

Fresh cut poplar is usually a light color, light weight, splits easily and not good for fireplaces. it pops easily in a fire. Known as a soft wood.

I would agree with Motley Q, I think poplar is on the right.
