Becoming a KCBS CBJ?
Hey Guys!
I am finally getting things right again to where I can come here a little more often and get back to the smoker. I still have the desire to compete one day and was wondering if maybe starting out being a judge would be a good place to start? Maybe seeing and tasting what is turned in will give me an idea of where to start? |

Good idea. Judging is a good way to see what's being turned in
Just know that most of the food turned in is not championship level quality Including ours

I judged for 6 years before deciding to start my own team for my Masters cook.
It was kinda like cheating because I already knew the answers to the test!!! Ed

Thanks for the input. Just take a class and look for local comps that need judges? Any pointers so I don't look like a dummy out there

Have fun. You will learn the basics during the class and actually get to judge some bbq and score. During that portion of the class, at least in mine, there was some real good discussion about the appearance, taste and tenderness. When you leave you will be good to judge and the more events you judge the more you will learn. Also, you will meet some really great people who love bbq.
I got certified last year, was able to judge at 5 events my judging improved with each event. AND.....my hats off to the teams, they are also a really great bunch of people who are very dedicated and invest not only $$$ but tons of their time. Get out and chat with some of the teams, wish them well!!! |
