I have been asked to do a cook for about 70+ kids and I need a good but simple Baked Bean recipe. I would like to work with canned beans and jazz them up a little.
Can anyone give me any suggestions? Please

Kerri's Baked Beans are also good just don't have the Bourbon.

Canned apple pie filling is a hit when mixed with canned beans and brown sugar.

I do a pretty basic thing that generally is well received. To a couple of big cans (40oz) I add 1 large or a couple of medium chopped onions, about 8 ounces of tangy BBQ sauce (I use Montgomery Inn Ribs King), couple of tablespoons of yellow mustard and about a tablespoon of brown sugar. Bake that up for about 45 minutes or so @ 350 and bingo. I think the tangy sauce is the key - most canned baked beans are on the sweet side so you want a sauce that has some bite.

Thanks Komoman. The reason why I am at a bit of a loss is because it is for High School kids. Many can be somewhat picky. I have seen some freak out over just seeing chopped onion in something. If it was for the guys I would have no problem. I have a time factor squeeze and I am trying to pack as much flavor in while keeping it simple.

Yeah, ya know as soon as I clicked post I thought about our teens and how they generally react(Dad gets lots of the beans though!). Some onion powder might provide a bit of the flavor that would help and not be visible and provide instant picky reaction.

Here's one I use. Ain't had nothing but happy faces with these

Single Batch Baked Beans
1 lb Ground Beef
4 slices bacon
3/4 cup chopped oinion
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup ketchup
15 oz. kidney beans
15 oz. lima beans
15 oz. baked beans
2 Tbls white vinegar
2 Tbls yellow mustard

Brown beef, bacon and onions, drain
Mix all other ingredients together and baked covered at 325 for 1/2 hour
Uncover and bake another 1/2 hour at 325
Serve or refrigerate and reheat later
Added Option: Drizzle on some real good Maple syrup after the first cooking to soak in during the second half.

Here's mine: Beans For A Crowd

My baked beans disappear everytime I make them.

1 big can of beans
between 1 and 2 lbs of bbq (pulled pork, leftover brisket, rib trimmings etc etc)
1 onion
1 green pepper
bbq sauce ( I use sweet baby rays)
Brown sugar to taste ( i would use a cup or so for the big can of beans)
bbq rub
couple cloves of garlic

Chop the bbq, onion, garlic and green pepper.
saute the onion until clear with the green pepper and garlic.
mix in the bbq and cook for a few minutes to get the flavors to meld.
mix the bbq/onion garlic gp mixture in with the beans.
Add bbq sauce and brown sugar and rub

Throw that concoction on the smoker until its bubbling good around the edges.
Easy baked beans that are a huge hit every time.

Bush's beans, brown sugar, molasses, dried onion, and bbq sauce. Mix it up and bake at 350 for about an hour.]
Sweet and tasty without "green" or "weird" stuff in the beans!!

Pork n Beans
Chopped Onion
Brown Sugar
Cover with a sweet BBQ like Cookies BBQ sauce
Bake until carmalized on the top

Easy go to BBQ beans that all my family's kids love.

Thank each one of you for the suggestions – they all sound real good! I might be over worrying the picky eaters. It is killing me not putting onions and bell pepper in the mix. I plan on testing some of these Saturday and see where it takes me.

I really like Kevins pit bean recipie

This is the original Kevin's Beans:

1 can Bush's "original baked beans" The "big boy" #10 can. About a gallon.
2 large yellow onions; chopped
2/3 cup of your favorite bbq sauce
1 entire green bell pepper - diced
1 entire yellow bell pepper - diced
1 entire red bell pepper - diced
1/3 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup molasses
1/4 cup "sugar in the raw"
2 tablespoons dry mustard
2 cups pulled pork (save a quart back next time you cook a butt)
The pulled pork is a must include ingredient, don't skip it!
1/4 tspn fresh ground black pepper
1/4 tspn chili powder (I use fresh ground de Arbol)
1/4 lb uncooked bacon slices; cut into pieces
3 tspn texas pete hot sauce

Mix in a large pan (I use the aluminium hotel pans), and smoke for 4+ hours. I like to place the pan under a couple of butts to catch the drippings.

I haven't tried Patio Daddio's beans yet - but will! I can, however, personally vouch for Kevin's, Wampus', and Keri's beans - can't go wrong with any of 'em.

Here is a basic calico beans recipe. I usually add more beans to it to make a crockpot full. Adjust the ketchup and brown sugar and other ingredients to your liking.

Calico Beans

1 ½ lbs. Hamburger, drained

1 lb. Bacon, cut up and browned

1 c. chopped onion

1 can pork and beans

1 can kidney beans

1 can baby butter beans, drained

1 c. brown sugar

¾ c. catsup

2 tsp. vinegar

1 T. mustard

*

Combine all ingredients and cook on a low setting for several hours.

I haven't seen that recipe in a long time. Kevin is the King of Beans here at the Brethren IMHO. I sure miss that farker!

Those all look good –especially “Kevin’s Baked Beans”. Looks like I am going to have a busy weekend.
