So the way it looks, you have to do 35 comps to be in the running for TOY.

No, you have to do 10 to basically qualify or win the TOY.

10 will get you in the door. Realistically, it will take 25+ to get you up there in Top 25 (if you're consistently good).

So really is it possible to win toy or let's say top 5 when your doing 10 events a year, or is the teams that do the most going to have a upper hand. You would think they would take your top 10 or 15 events so it equals out for the team not doing it every weekend. Or am I seeing this the wrong way? Just think it would be more interesting with top 10 events.

This has been discussed a few times. Personal opinion, it should be a "batting average" with a clip level number of contests to qualify.

Only your highest 10 scores count toward TOY.

You could cook 30 contests and have 9 wins and get beat by a team that cooked 10 contests and won all of them(size of the contests being equal).

They only count your top 10 contests. You can cook 10, or you can cook 30, but they only count the top 10.

My understanding is that one team in the top 25 overall cooked just 10 contests in 2010. The rest cooked more and dropped some.

I don't have the stats on Quau for 2010, but looking at the points they ended up with, they had at least 9 GC this year. A perfect 3,000 points would be winning 10 GCs with at least 50 teams in the field (250 for GC + 50 bonus points = 300 points x 10 contests gives you 3,000). Quau had 2,942 - quite a run. I can only dream of getting to that level.

I cooked in 16 last year and was fortunate to finish 8th in pork. so it can be done without having to cook 25+ contests a year..

QUAU had the most dominant season in BBQ. I'd rank it higher than what Mike Davis did 5 years ago... The talent level is a heck of a lot higher than it was 5 years ago.

Cooking more contests certainly helps get you into the top 25, however the number doesn't have to be huge, as mentioned above a team with less than 15 is in the top 25 overall this year...we were 14th in 2010 cooking 20, Big Tz Q Cru was 16th cooking 22, Rhythm N Que was 4th cooking 20, Big Creek with 6th cooking 24, and i'm sure I'm missing others.

With that said, can you win TOY cooking 10 comps? Not unless your damn good, is that bad? I'm not sure it is. If I can only cook 10 events in 2011 then I will likely not make the Top 25 and I'm ok with that...up front I know it probably takes a 20 weekend commitment and some luck to get my name on the sheet and 25+ weekends to have any chance to win.

The problem I see with the "batting average" style system is that is may actually encourage teams to cook less contests, that can't be a good thing for KCBS or our sport.

Or cook more if their batting average sucks :)

I guess I always thought of winning % as just an element of ToY scoring, similar to the extra points you get for winning a 50 team contest vs. a 25 teams contest. Just enough "bonus points" to rank this team (5 grands/10 contests) over this team (6 grands / 25 contests).

Never thought of it that way, I could see it working as a component of the score. good thought, you should consider running for the board
