Default ECB score.. mod ideas welcomed

A friend of mine gave me his old brinkman gourmet smoker/grill. i can tell i need to add some serious mods. I did a google search and found tons, but mainly what i wanna do is try to make the intakes like UDS set up or a WSM. Im going to make a charcoal basket somehow for it and then add an exhaust sine the lid has no exhaust. i assume its like this because the lid doesnt fit tight on it. not sure if everyone is familur with the ECB, but the coal pan fits in another pan. i see that as a problem. Might get rid of the inner pan and make a charcoal basket to fit in the outer pan.. i smoked a butt on it all ready and turned out AWESOME. I just hate adding fuel every 2 hours. My main concerns are intake, fire basket and exhaust. i will work on the other small details later.

I just got done modding one of these. This is the best mod site I found.
http://home.comcast.net/~day_trippr/smoker_mods.htm
Also this one.
http://www.randyq.addr.com/ecb/ecb.html
Here's mine.

I ordered replacement damper kits for the WSM 18 part # 63015, $8 each and they contain 3 dampers. Just drill the holes in the bottom and bolt on the vents. I was able to cook for a total of 6 hours at 230 with only one pan of charcoal and it still had some left. Let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
jason

holy crap! thats exactly what im looking for. That ECB looks awesome. You even made new legs for it. haha One question though. Would it be advised to remove the silver charcoal pan and then make my own fire basket out of expanded metal and place the fire basket in the green outer pan? or will the heat burn the bottom out?

thanx

Im so gonna do this tomorrow.

Thanks! The main problem I see with removing the pan is the body of the smoker rests on it. You'd have to fashion a fire ring with a lip on it or redesign the whole bottom all together. I've only got 2 burns on mine, but I dont see the pan being a problem. Looks like someone already put a weber grate in the pan and elevated it with some bolts. Now the ash has a place to go. You just need to plug that hole in the bottom section, add some vents, and seal the lid.
Cheers,
Jason

I was going to post pictures but bigfootinindiana's mods are similar to mine. I can get 10+ hours at 225-250 using the Minion Method with just occasional bottom vent adjustments.

Those are nicer than the one I have. Mine doesn't have a closed bottom. That looks pretty cool though, I might have to pick one up and do this. Thanks.

When I got my open bottomed one, I started to mod it up. I fixed the basket. Then, before I dealt with the open bottom, I just said what the heck and built a few drums. I use mine all the time, with the charcoal basket at different heights, for steaks and hot dogs/burgers and chicken. It stays right beside the picnic table.

ya for the first cook, i added the charcoal grate. I knew i was gonna run into issues with out it. i totally forgot that the body rests on the pan, but if the brethren above me had a 10 hour burn minion style. Which i assume is unlit charcoal with lit charcoal on top like how i use the UDS.. Anyway. thanx for the link. thats exactly what i was looking for. i might as well use the ECB and make it look nice. heck, maybe ill give it to my friend when its done. HAHA

Sweet action. i love stubbs.

I called weber tonight to order some dampers for my OTS 22.5 BUT they would not let me order more than one for some odd reason. I tried to order the wsm pack BUT i needed some sort of number. So now i need to either make me own dampers for the ECB or find a wsm some where and nab the 2 digit letter code on the damper

Ill tell ya from experience, don't bother cementing on the rope gasket unless water never touches your ECB. Mine fell off first time it got wet. I just push it into the gap a bit, only takes a couple seconds.

i'm thinking the two digit code isnt some sort of mystery or anything... call them back and tell them its "DU"

I imagine they only let you order one, because your OTS 22.5 only uses one. You will need the WSM Vent Damper Replacement Part #,the 22" part # is 63016, and the 18.5" WSM part # is 63015

I did the same for a long time. Then I was using JB Weld for something else and decided to attach it permanently. It has gotten wet several times with no problem. Good stuff.
