Default May Be Going Overboard Here

Brethren,

Last month we started talking about a Michigan vs OSU brethren cook off. The response was great probably 12 - 15 teams/groups going to come out. In my normal fashion I set out to make things happen.

I found a site that we can have up to 25 teams at. Step 1.

Also came up with an idea about judges, charity work.

Now my brain is thinking - if we do this as a charity event I can get sponsors have the bash be free for participation and meat, etc.
I can create a non-profit org and we can actually make money for a good cause for the event, get some publicity for the group and what bbq cook off's are really about and maybe even get some prize money for the people coming.

Am I going overboard on this? I think I am a little but I don't know how to do anything small. Did I order the small or medium spicewine? no. I got the large. Did i get 1 chargriller? No I got 2.

Instead of creating a charitable organization, find one and use their 501.3.c status. Funnel all of the funding through them.

Although I like religious organizations, most corporations don't. Consider than when selecting your charity.

Since it sounds like you are doing a college rivalry, how about a scholarship fund? Have the proceeds go towards a scholarship for a student from each school.

Can you hook up with Spyder Mike or some of the guys who created the Great Lakes BBQ Assoc?

I could swear I read that they formed an LLC that was 501(b3) or whatever.

I'll try and dig those posts up.

Hey Bob, what about getting QFM96 to cover it and maybe do the judging? They could even broadcast from there. That would be GREAT coverage because the Q has been around since the 70's at least and maybe longer. They have a HUGE listening audience!

I bet Daddy Wags and Jerry Elliott would never turn down some good Q!!

I know they have done other charitable things. Toys for Tots is one that comes to mind.

Perhaps you could continue to interest teams via the Great Lakes BBQ Association http://www.bbqtalk.ca/forums/viewfor...ae1a94893d2578

Hey Bob,

Sounds like a great Idea, I actually brought this up this past weekend with a few of the members of the GLBBQA and they were all for it. The Charity idea is a great one. Let's keep in touch!!

I've got my attorney looking into the non-profit status and my accountant looking at the tax implications.

I wanted the proceeds to go the boys club of Columbus and Ann Arbor. That way it's for both. Our prestigious schools make more than enough money for scholarships already.

You might have some of the kids be judges too. A couple of DJ's and some smiling kids are great PR.

What a great idea, good luck on your contest. I think the Kid deal as a couple of judges would be unique.
