I'm not trying to start a battle between the sides. I'm asking this question because I have never had a gravity pit before. I have used both before and both have pluses and minuses. I guess I'm leaning towards lump because you can get it without additives. But I'm worried about it getting caught in the chute. I don't know if that happens or not but with the difference in size and big pieces it seems like it could. Also if you could point me towards some good brands I can order online that would be great.

Try an all natural briquette like stubbs or the new Weber charcoal. It's uniform in size and won't bridge in the chute.

I have used both lump & briquettes in my Assassin without any issues. In order of preference: Stubbs, Kingsford Pro, B&B or RO lump.

RO lump. I don't care if there is a rock or a finger or whatever else I have read as to what people have found in the bag, IMO it imparts the best flavor of any that I have tried.
