We recently conducted a calcutta auction at the Lake Havasu cook off
I know these things are big in Texas have they cought on anywhere else?
Nice lil gift for the Cancersucks Monica Fun
The Local Food Bank and 3 winning bidders
We went with payouts on GC, 1st in Pork and 10th in Ribs
:) The GC also hit 10th in Ribs :)
Great Bid Sweet Peppers
Then Kelly won the GC but was also had Notley Que
so he hit the 1st in Pork money

A good day for Four Legs Up indeed

Makes things a little more exciting. Larry (Chromesporty) made a little extra change for his 1st in chicken Sat.

There was $5000 in the calcutta this past week, so they paid out top 5 in each category.

Interesting
My thinking was to pay in Three spots and spread it out
We "bundled" the teams into groups of 3
A top mid and newer teams
It seemed to work
Just have to educate the Folks and get the sponsoring groups
folks out there to bid

It can be an acquired, and profitable, skill:lol: Were teams allowed to buy a portion of their team back, if they didn't win the auction for themselves?

Certain teams have a history of going for a good chunk of change.

When and how do you conduct the calcutta auctions and who is allowed to bid?Just any one that is there or just teams? in my short cooking time all I have seen here is side bets and lately no one has been doing them .

In TX anyone can bid. Keller Lions club members bought alot of teams last year.

This was not done this week But I do indeed think it would add to the event

I'd be all over that, love the idea, my brother does those in fishing tournaments and they get in the hundreds of thousands.

Yea Man I watched Kelly Wertz and Sweet Peppers work it
Them dudes made a buck

I vehemently oppose outsiders bidding up the teams at a Calcutta. I'd rather swap turn in trays with a buddy and split any winnings with them rather than let an outsider take money for my win. Screw them!!

For this reason I prefer the cookers pool.

Then we will not be putting you on the Hospitality team :)

Yes there is that side to the story

Great now we have to bring more money to a contest.

Ok, count me in, great idea to get sponsors involved.
I can see them parading out a team captain, reading off the type of smoker they use, points in the TOY or Pickled Pig standings, best finishes for the year.

Howzit work? Never heard of it before.

I'd probably be a sucker one time!

Teams or "bundles" of teams are auctioned off
If your guy places in selected categories your a
winner winner BBQ dinner
we paid in GC, 1st Pork and 10th Ribs

Brian,I have not been in a bbq calcutta but in the other hobbies where I have seen them they have an auction. Some they will auction win ,place ,show or 1st,2nd,3rd?then that money is split and goes to the owner of the winning bid if that team finishes in the place bid? I did well in the bear drags off of the calcuttas ,almost paid my beer bill for the day when we would go.

We got bid up to $200... and I think Maynard would have bid us up to $225 if he would have gotten the guys attention lol. We pulled down $620 total, I believe $350 was our calcutta $$. It payed better than the contest winnings for sure.

This was not done this week But I do indeed think it would add to the event
In the TX events there are two key differences:
1. Entry fees are much lower
2. Payouts are also much lower
The turnins and judging are ALOT different. much less tension than a KCBS turnin.... (you have 2 hrs sometimes between turn-ins)

The calcutta paid twice what the contest paid for 1st
That Chicken call was STRONG!!! And yes, you got a nice payday out of it.

This is why Geroge's comment was important... since the contest payouts are small at these events, the Calcutta is really where you make your money. If the entry fee to the contest is $65 instead of $175-200 (many times what it is at a KCBS event), that extra $100+ can go into buying yourself or others. Then when the local sponsors get into the mix, the pot can grow nicely... BUT, if a cook doesnt have any shot at that money for themselves.... Why would they cook to just let someone else get a payday... so you have to have some "etiquette" in there that allows the teams an option, to buy at least a portion of themselves back if they want. IF the team doesnt elect to take the option, then if they get a call, it was on them.
