Hickory nuts
Has anyone ever used the outer husk of the hickory nut to smoke before. There are tons of then all over and I'd like to not miss the boat on this one.
Thanks

I'd spatchcock a chicken and give them a try. I would use the nuts too if there were available.

I've used pecan shells before that I soaked in red wine for fish. I'd make sure the shells are very dry before using them.

The outer husk of pecan shells will impart a very bitter and unpleasant flavor when used to smoke with. The hulls, however will give some good flavor. I would think that the outer husk of hickory nuts would be even worse. I would pass on the husks.
Blessings, Omar

Taste one. They are bitter. I'd pass. Use the shells only.

I have never tried the hulls...
My mother eats the nuts and gives me the shells when we go to visit. I toss a handful on the charcoal with no ill tastes. I read where nut shells are good to use, but I just don't have the patience to crack and eat what little meat can be found in hickory nuts. If had one in my yard, I'd just throw the whole nut in minus the husks. |
