On cold days I will warm splits in my LSG warmer if not using to cook or put a split in the FB opposite the fire otherwise have not found a need to prewarm.

I stack them on the side of my fire basket. When I add them to the coal bed, the burst into flames immediately:

LSG with IFB here and I warm my splits in the firebox. Incredibly small fire on the left and warm a split on the right. Yeah, sometimes it catches too soon but only if I've built too large of a fire - which is my mistake.

My take, in 2009 video AND me tipping in a 245 pounds. LOL This is the iold Brazos pit, with an oversized ****ty firebox on it, It was one of the first Klose reverse pits David made in 1987.

go to 210 in.

I do something different though. I like my first sticks to go ahead and me not wet but cold because that first course of wood I smoke at the 200 range and I don't mind the extra smoke. But I immediately begin putting on wood to dry cuz I know I was clean 275 "roasting" smoke and clean "rest" smoke if I do that.

I build my fire off to one side and then warm splits on the other side. I never saw much of a difference by putting them on top of the FB so I started doing this and it makes for a much faster ignition, IMHO

I don't have a warmer on my Shirley. In the winter, I put them right on top of the firebox. In the summer, I put the grate from my Lodge Sportsman on the firebox and then pile my splits on that.

On my vertical -I just use my fire chamber. I have a few inches -3 to 4- to either side of my fuel basket. I can keep 4 or so splits ready to go.

I lay mine on top of the FB. They warm nicely up there. Sometimes in the summer, they will begin to smoke, but that’s no problem.
