Default Charging for butts???

I have some neighbors that have offered to pay me to smoke some butts for them. How much is the going rate for something like that?

What if they just pay for the butts, and someday they can return some other favor for you? Anything they do well that you don't?

Personally I'd ask them to supply:
Meat
Coal
Wood
Pans to serve them in
and a drink of my choice (case of beer, bottle of vodka, you get the idea)

That would be enough for me. Only reason I mentioned coal/wood is because I don't keep a stock-pile of that stuff handy, so I'd expect them to provide all I need to do it for them.

I wouldn't ask them for cash.

Have them buy the butts and some beer then call it even. Even better, insist that they drink the beer WITH you while you are smoking.

I just figure that this could be great opportunity to bond with a neighbor. In today's fast paced society, I don't think that neighbors bond as much as they used to.

It doesn't need to be beer - maybe it's whiskey or cigars (whatever floats your boats).

In addition to smoking the butts, throw a fatty or something on the smoker for you guys to enjoy while the butts cook. Share a few cooking tips, talk smart about the wives, politics, sports, etc.

Look man, I'll answer your question straight up. They need to buy the butts, then it's on you for the wood and coals and time, and it's $6 per raw (NOT cooked) pound.

If it were me, I'd rather go with the couple cases of beer in trade deal, but that is not what you asked. However, reading about all that beer has made me thirsty, and I have 3 hours yet until I can drink one ... so thanks guys!

I don't know what you cook on, but if I throw ribs or butts on my barrel orBGE I usually suggest a case of beer. These cookers don't require attention so other than $5. in lump I have little investment.
I will also supply the groceries (at their expense) as most of my friends and neighbors are clueless about what makes a good butt or rack.

Remember when you charge for food you open a whole different can of worms......liability....I don't know how good of friends you are but anybody becomes sick from your food then you are held liable.....just alittle food for thought.....and yes I have insurance on that too....

Thanks for all the input. Trade is a charge too in its own way. Might have to do something like that.
