I use my mini WSM most in the winter. Easy to move around if the weathers bad or windy.

UDS and most smokers I've used its all about keeping the wind off it. If its -30F and 30MPH wind your never win. So just block the wind and use more fuel.

Time to build yourself a UDS before it becomes too cold for you to build it!
Thanks aawa! With my Shack I don't log on everyday, way to link some good cold smoking info.

Chet, from my experience cooking in the extreme cold a UDS rocks as long as the wind isn't screamin on it. I've used them insulated and un-insulated only big difference is amount of fuel(lump) I use. I have not tried an offset in the extreme cold I have been using a custom built one for about a month at my BBQ shack... it seems to be more effected by weather then my UDS so I think in the dead of winter I would defiantly have some wool blankets handy for it. But that's just and semi-educated guess.

Good luck and welcome to the Brethren you won't find a more friendly bunch that will go out of there way to help!!

pwa

O.... Yep I was smoking

The cold I can handle, although it takes a lot of fuel (charcoal and wood) and the movers blankets for insulation but when it is slick, icy and knee deep snow, I pass.
Ice especially is not my friend.

My experience is that once the temps get to -20 or -25, you really don't notice if it gets colder than that. Your body just says "Dude! WTF are you doing out here?"

Then again, I have never experienced -60. -55 wind chill factor is the coldest I have felt.

+1

Welding blanket from Harbor Freight - works awesome! A heavy wool blanket will do the trick too.
