Facebook Yardsale SCORE!!! PRON
Ok, so I have been stalking Craigslist and Facebook for MONTHS now looking for Weber's. I missed a $50 Performer two weeks ago because I fell asleep, WTF So I was on Facebook at work last night ( I know ) and browsing a new Yardsale site when I see a dirty old smoker for $25. Had to join the group so I could message her and finally picked it up late afternoon yesterday.
What I have here is a Weber Smokey Mountain and from the L on the vent it looks like a 1989. There is a few small spots of rust but nothing major. Looks like it hasn't seen much cooking but had a hard life sitting out in the mud behind a barn or garage. The water pan looks as though someone stepped on it. I cleaned most of it up but I still want to bang out the pan, polish the legs and maybe replace the hardware. The vents were all bent and stuck but they broke free pretty easily . I think I got an awesome deal at $25. Now on to the pics!! After cleanup! |

What a great score! That thing is really in pretty good shape, all things considered. Get a new wood handle on her... and get to cookin'!

I was working on it, LOL. Took me awhile to figure out how to post flickr pics...I got it!! Thanks, I think I can just clean up the wood, it just needs some sanding and stain. |

nice looking WSM. You should try the "insert image" icon and paste the web address so the pics show in the posting. It's so easy even I can do it.

Is there anything I should do to this before I start cooking on it? Since its so old I would assume it doesn't require any type of seasoning? I was just going to stick a gauge through the top vent but what should I use for meat temp? Is there a probe that won't break the bank and is not a POS? |

I'd season it. Lightly wipe down the inside with oil and fire up some charcoal. Buy a Maverick ET-73. You won't be disappointed.

Nice score! I would do a pre burn after a wipe down of oil on the inside just to clean it and test the air flow.

Season I shall, as for the Mavericks they seem to get bad reviews on Amazone. IS there another alternative?
I was looking into getting an older Omega Digital Thermometer from Ebay and wiring some RTD's in from work? Anyone try going the industrial route with their probes/thermometers? |
