Default Choke Cherry for Smoking?

A buddy cut down a tree in his yard. Says the fruit is very astringent.

Anyone here know about choke cherry? Can it be used for smoking? If so, does diameter matter? He's got everything from small branches to 4" or 5" diameter trunk.

Should I bring it home?

If so, would this be more useful for a WSM cook as supplemental smoke (like you would use wood chunks on your charcoal bed), or could I actually burn this in my offset mixed with larger splits of oak and cherry?

I've never used it, but I suspect it will be fine. It is a fruit tree in the rose family, as are apple, crabapple, peach, pear, serviceberry, plum, almond, and all other cherry species. All of those are frequently used for smoking, so I think you'll be fine to use your choke cherry.

Yes it is fine for smoking. I trim trees that border my property, free wood.

I use it also, kind of a weed tree around here.

It's in the cherry family and has a similar smoke profile
