The answer to this question is rather staggering.
The estimated amount of people who get sick every year due to foodborne illness is 76 million people.

The estimated amount of people hospitalized is 300,000.
And the estimate of cases of death are 5000.

This is the USA alone!

A lot of good doctors will tell you that almost every case of "stomach flu" or "Stomach virus" that we self-diagnose is actually a food borne illness.

Joe, just out of curiosity, how do they come up with that number. I'm sure there are many cases that don't get reported.

I am guessing that is why they call them estimates. Some number crunchers somewhere must have a formula for figuring these stats.
Best I can give you on that one.

Thanks Joe. That makes sense. I guess for every reported case they figure there's X number of unreported cases.
