Default saw dust

I dont know how many of you use sawdust to cold smoke but, I have a question.

Last weekend I was cutting up some hickory limbs making chunks for my uds.

I caught the sawdust coming out of the saw.

I tried some last night and it burned and smelled like the hickory I buy.

Any reason I couldn't use that instead of buying hickory dust?

Go for it. It will work, or it won't. I'm thinking it will work just fine.

Only one concern -- is it sawdust from a chainsaw cut? That would likely have some chain oil in it. Otherwise, it should be fine.

The oil is my concern.

I know it burns just fine.

So, it is chainsaw dust? If so, I would not use it for cooking anything.

If you have ever observed a saw in use, most of what little oil used flings off the front of the bar at the end. My 029 uses 1 tank of oil for 2 tanks of gas. If you are that concerned switch to veggie oil not to mention that smoke in general is full of carcinogens.

I was thinking the same thing.

Cant see any dark colored dust. Which would indicate oil.

Is there a health concern with it if there is oil in it?

I only use dust for cheese and bacon.

Enough to reach 15 ppm oil and grease according to an EPA study long ago. Considering chared grilled foods and wood smoke contain carcinogens anyway what's the issue? If it was bad for you CA would have banned its use ;)

Only if you consider yourself "Ok" at the start if this experiment ;)

I'm also in the camp if a smokin hot fire or two doesn't take the liner out of a drum it's good to season for a UDS as a low temp cooking fire won't touch it.
